About the Anti-Lecompton Democratic Party
Anti-Lecompton Democrat is a label assigned to eight elected representatives in the 36th Congress. The members were Democrats from Indiana, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania who opposed the "Lecompton" constitution--one of the constitutions proposed for governing Kansas upon its admission to the union. In contrast to the Topeka, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte constitutions, the Lecompton constitution would have enshrined slavery. The Lecompton constitution was supported by President James Buchanan and many Southern Democrats, but was overwhelmingly rejected by Kansas voters. Although these members would have typically been listed as Democrats on electoral ballots, they voted against the majority of congressional Democrats in opposition to Kansas' admission as a state under the Lecompton constitution. Of the seven surviving Anti-Lecompton Democrats, six declined to run for re-election. The exception was John Hickman, who was elected to the 37th Congress as a Republican.
