About the Conservative Republican Party
"Conservative Republican" was a party label used by Rep. Thomas Elliott Stewart when he ran for election to the 40th Congress. He was elected to the House of Representatives against opponents from the Democratic Party and the "Radical Republican" wing of the Republican Party (Republicans who believed President Lincoln was too slow to end slavery; President Lincoln was not aggressive enough during the U.S. Civil War; Presidents Lincoln and Johnson were too concilliatory to former Confederates; in support of impeaching President Johnson in 1868; and in support of President Ulysses S. Grant in the elections of 1868 and 1872). Rep. Stewart was not a candidate for re-election for the 41st Congress and the party label has not been used by a sitting member of Congress since.
