About the Liberal Republican Party
The Liberal Republican Party was formed in 1870 in Missouri in opposition to President Ulysses S. Grant and the Radical Republicans, who were staunchly anti-confederate and fought for full rights for African-Americans and limited political rights for former confederates. The party opposed the increasing power of the federal government, the reconstruction laws in Southern states, as well as the perceived corruption of the Grant administration. Many of its members were former Democrats, and Republicans who supported states’ rights. In 1872, the Liberal Republicans nominated the same candidate as the Democratic Party did, Horace Greeley but he lost in a landslide reelection victory for President Grant. The Liberal Republican Party dissolved shortly thereafter.
