About the Ind. Republican Party
Many politicians have called themselves Independent Republicans over time, and they are not part of a single political party or movement. Most Independent Republicans in Congress were Republicans who had failed win the Republican party nomination for their seats(particularly early in the nation’s history, nomination processes were often not open to the general public, as they are today) and went on run for and win their seats as Independent Republican. Many ran as independent Republicans for only one term of several they served in Congress, servings as Republicans in their other terms. Most elected Independent Republicans were in Congress during the reconstruction era, near the beginning of the Republican party. There have been far fewer Independent Republicans than Independent Democrats.
