About the Opposition Party (36th)
By 1859, the American ("Know-Nothing") Party and Whig Party had both declined precipitously around the country. Races in the north of the country were typically between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, but in parts of the South including Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia, opponents of the Democratic Party organized as the "Opposition Party" for the 36th Congress--distinct from the label Opposition given to anti-Democratic members of the 34th Congress.
By the 37th Congress, Georgia (along with South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas) had seceded from the United States. Remaining Southern opponents of the Democratic Party who did not wish to join the Republican Party continued as the Unionist Party, Constitutional Unionist Party, or Unconditional Unionist Party.
