About the Progressive Party
"Progressive Republican" was a party label used by Rep. Theron Akin, who was elected to the 62nd Congress. The label "Progressive Republican" referred to members of the Republican Party who opposed conservative Republicans, including President William Howard Taft, after a schism opened up circa 1909-1910 over tariff and anti-trust policy. The label was retired after former President Theodore Roosevelt unsuccessfully contested the Republican Presidential nomination in 1912, and ultimately formed the Progressive Party ("Bull Moose Party"). Progressive Republicans who left the Republican Party ran under the Progressive Party label from 1912-1916. Rep. Akin failed to secure the Progressive Party nomination and the party label "Progressive Republican" has not subsequently been used by any representative. In 1918, former Progressives and Progressive Republicans rejoined the Republican Party, with the exception of Rep. Whitmell Martin of Louisiana, who ran for re-election as a Democrat.
