Biography

Representative from Mississippi; born in Laurel, Jones County, Miss., October 31, 1949; graduated from Franklin County High School, Meadville, Miss., 1967; B.A., William Carey College, Hattiesburg, Miss., 1970; small businessman; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First and to the three succeeding Congresses, changed party affiliation from a Democrat to a Republican on November 10, 1995, elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fifth Congress (January 3, 1989-January 3, 1999); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Sixth Congress in 1998; unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Mississippi in 2000; assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, 2001-2002.
