Biography

a Senator from Delaware; born near Dover, Mispillion Hundred, Kent County, Del., in December 1770; attended Cokesbury College, Maryland; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice in Dover, Del.; served two years as a captain in the United States Army; adjutant general of Delaware in 1803; appointed in 1801 and subsequently elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Latimer; reelected in 1803 and 1809 and served from February 28, 1801, until his death in Wilmington, Del., November 4, 1809; interment in the Old Swede Churchyard.
