Biography
Representative from North Carolina; born in Surry County, N.C., February 1, 1782; was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1808; member of the State house of commons in 1813 and 1814; elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth through the Seventeenth Congresses; reelected to the Eighteenth as a Crawford Republican; reelected to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses as an Adams; reelected to the Twenty-first through the Twenty-fourth Congresses as an Anti-Jacksonian; reelected to the Twenty-fifth through the Twenty-seventh Congresses as a Whig and served from March 4, 1815, until his death; chairman, Committee on Claims (Fifteenth through Twenty-first Congresses), Committee on Territories (Twenty-third Congress); died in Washington, D.C., February 23, 1842; interment in Panther Creek Cemetery, Surry County, N.C.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
