Biography
A Representative from Kentucky; born in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Ky., January 22, 1843; attended the common schools, and was graduated from the Louisville (Ky.) Male High School in 1860; taught school four years; was graduated from the Louisville Law School in 1866; was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Louisville; prosecuting attorney for Jefferson County 1874-1877; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1887); chairman, Committee on Rivers and Harbors (Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1886; resumed the practice of law; appointed Minister to Hawaii by President Cleveland in 1893 and served until his death in Honolulu, Hawaii, January 6, 1897; interment in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Ky.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
