Biography
			Representative from Ohio;  born in Niles, Cayuga County, N.Y., August 31, 1810; attended the public schools and Plattsburg Academy, Steuben County, N.Y.;  studied law;  was admitted to the bar in 1837 and commenced practice in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio;  moved to Plymouth, Ohio;  prosecuting attorney of Richland County, Ohio, 1839-1843;  elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1847);  chairman, Committee on Invalid Pensions (Twenty-eighth Congress);  resumed the practice of law in Mansfield, Ohio;  affiliated with the Republican Party on its formation in 1856;  delegate to numerous Republican National Conventions;  justice of the supreme court of Ohio 1856-1871;  died in Mansfield, Ohio, July 19, 1880;  interment in Mansfield Cemetery.
