Biography
Representative and a Senator from Louisiana; born on the 'Mary Louise' plantation, near New Iberia, Iberia Parish, La., August 17, 1864; attended public and private schools; attended Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. 1879-1882; night inspector of customs in New Orleans 1885-1888, when he was appointed assistant weigher and statistician 1888-1889; studied law at Tulane University, New Orleans, La., graduating in 1889; admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New Iberia; elected prosecuting attorney of the nineteenth judicial district 1892-1897; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth and to the eight succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1897-March 3, 1915); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Justice (Sixty-third Congress); did not seek renomination in 1914, having become a candidate for Senator; elected as a Democrat in 1914 to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1915, until his death in New Iberia, La., April 12, 1918; chairman, Committee on National Banks (Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses); interment in the Catholic Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
