Representative from Michigan; born in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich., June 6, 1945; graduated from Notre Dame High School, Pontiac, Mich., 1963; B.A., University of Iowa, Iowa City, 1967; M.A., Chapman College, Orange, Calif., 1972; United States Air Force, 1968-1972; member of the Michigan state house of representatives, 1973-1977; delegate to the Michigan state Democratic conventions, 1972-1977; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1977-January 3, 2003); majority whip (One Hundred Second and One Hundred Third Congresses); minority whip (One Hundred Fourth through One Hundred Seventh Congresses); not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination for Governor of Michigan.
