Representative from Florida; born in Ocala, Marion County, Fla., March 22, 1933; attended Ocala Elementary School; graduated, Ocala High School, 1950; B.S. and B.A., University of Florida, Gainsville, 1954; LL.B., University of Florida Law School, 1961; United States Air Force, captain, 1955-1958; admitted to the Florida bar, 1961, and commenced practice in Daytona Beach; elected, Florida house of representatives, 1968-1974; elected, Florida senate, 1974-1980; unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate, 1980; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 3, 1989); was not a candidate for reelection, but was an unsuccessful nominee in 1988 for the United States Senate; elected Lieutenant Governor of Florida in 1990 for the term commencing January 8, 1991, and reelected in 1994; unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1998; upon the death of Governor Lawton Chiles was sworn in as Governor of Florida on December 13, 1998, and served until January 5, 1999.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
