A Senator from Missouri; born in St. Louis, Mo., March 6, 1939; attended the public schools; graduated, Princeton University 1960; graduated, University of Virginia Law School 1963; practiced law in Washington, D.C., and returned to Missouri in 1967; assistant attorney general of Missouri 1969; State auditor 1970; Governor of Missouri 1973-1977, 1980-1985; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1986; reelected in 1992, 1998 and 2004, and served from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 2011; chair, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (One Hundred Fourth through One Hundred Sixth Congresses, One Hundred Seventh Congress [January 20, 2001-June 6, 2001]); was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2010; resumed the practice of law; was a resident of St. Louis, Mo., until his death on May 13, 2025.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
