a Senator from North Dakota; born in Bismarck, Burleigh County, N. Dak., March 12, 1948; attended the public schools of Bismarck and high school in Tripoli, Libya; attended the University of Missouri, Columbia 1967; graduated, Stanford University 1971; received a graduate degree from George Washington University 1975; assistant to the tax commissioner, Bismarck 1974-1980; tax commissioner, State of North Dakota 1981-1986; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1986 for the term ending January 3, 1993; was not a candidate for reelection to his seat in 1992, but was elected in a special election on December 4, 1992, to the unexpired portion of the term ending January 3, 1995, left vacant by the death of Quentin N. Burdick, which he assumed on December 14, 1992; reelected in 1994, 2000, and again in 2006, and served from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 2013; chair, Committee on the Budget (One Hundred Seventh Congress [January 3-20, 2001; June 6, 2001-January 3, 2003]; One Hundred Tenth to One Hundred Twelfth Congresses); was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2012.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
