Sullivan, Springfield, Mass., 1973-1978; member of the Springfield, Mass., city council, 1978-1984; Mayor of Springfield, Mass., 1984-1988; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First and to the seventeen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1989-present); chair, Committee on Ways and Means (One Hundred Sixteenth and One Hundred Seventeenth Congresses); chair, Joint Committee on Taxation (One Hundred Seventeenth Congress).
