Representative from Michigan; born in Midland, Midland County, Mich., May 8, 1961; graduated from Herbert Henry Dow High School, Midland, Mich., 1979; B.A., Hope College, Holland, Mich., 1983; M.P.A., Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., 1989; chemist; businessman; school administrator; member of the Midland, Mich., city council, 1997-2000; member of the Michigan state house of representatives, 2003-2008; member of the Michigan state senate, 2011-2014; elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fourteenth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2015-present); chair, Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party (One Hundred Eighteenth and One Hundred Nineteenth Congresses).
