Pleasant, Mich., 1997; M.A., East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., 2001; Ed.D., East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., 2007; United States Air Force, 1994-2001; assistant professor, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., 1998-2001; adjunct professor, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., 2001-2007; lay minister; Mayor of Snow Hill, N.C., 2001-2008; member of the North Carolina state senate, 2009-2011, 2013-2022; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Eighteenth Congress (January 3, 2023-present).
