Biography

Representative from Massachusetts and from Maine; born in Halifax, Mass., April 11, 1761; served in the Revolutionary War from April 1, 1777, until March 1780; graduated from Harvard University in 1787; studied theology; ordained to the ministry and licensed to preach; located in Winslow, Maine (then a district of Massachusetts), and was pastor of the Congregational Church for nearly twenty years; served in the Massachusetts senate in 1810; member of the Massachusetts house of representatives in 1811 and 1812; elected as Democratic Republican from Massachusetts to the Sixteenth Congress (March 4, 1819-March 3, 1821); when the State of Maine was separated from Massachusetts and admitted as a State into the Union was elected as a Democratic Republican Representative from Maine to the Seventeenth Congress; and reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1825); served in the Maine senate in 1828; member of the Maine house of representatives in 1834; died in Augusta, Maine, on January 27, 1834; interment in a tomb on the State grounds, Augusta, Maine.
