Biography

Representative from Ohio; born near Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, July 23, 1831; attended the common schools and completed an academic course; taught school three years in southern Ohio; was graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1857; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Wilmington, Ohio; editor of the Wilmington Watchman in 1859 and 1860; prosecuting attorney of Clinton County in 1862; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress (March 4, 1891-March 3, 1893); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1892; resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C.; died in Wilmington, Ohio, February 24, 1919; interment in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
