Biography

Representative from Michigan; born in Venango County, Pa., August 31, 1865; attended the public schools of Portland, Mich., and was graduated from Detroit (Mich.) College of Law; established the Portland Review in 1885, editing it until 1899; member of the State house of representatives 1890-1892; postmaster of Portland 1895-1899; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Detroit in 1899; assistant corporation counsel of Detroit 1903-1907; city comptroller 1907-1910; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1911-March 3, 1921); served as mayor of Detroit, Mich., in 1923 and 1924; resumed the practice of law in Fowlerville, Mich.; died in Howell, Mich., September 4, 1947; interment in Roseland Park, Detroit, Mich.
