Biography

Representative from New York; born in Amherst, N.H., September 26, 1778; attended the public schools; taught school; moved to Newburgh, N.Y., in 1800; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1802 and commenced practice in Newburgh; elected as a Republican to the Eleventh Congress (March 4, 1809-March 3, 1811); elected to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses and served until his resignation in March of 1815 (March 4, 1813-March 1815); accepted the position of United States attorney for the southern district of New York, to which he was appointed by President Madison, March 1815-June 30, 1819; resumed the practice of law; died in Newburgh, N.Y., July 13, 1832; interment in Old Town Cemetery.
