Biography

(Cousin of Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen, Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen, Jr., and Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, great grandson of Frederick Frelinghuysen [1753-1804], great-nephew of Theodore Frelinghuysen), a Senator from New Jersey; born in Raritan, Somerset County, N.J., March 12, 1869; attended the public schools; interested in insurance companies; served in the Spanish American War in 1898 as second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and ordnance officer; member, State senate 1906-1912, serving as president 1909-1910; Acting Governor of New Jersey ad interim; president of the State board of agriculture 1912-1925; president of the State board of education 1915-1919; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1917, to March 3, 1923; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922; chairman, Committee on Coast Defenses (Sixty-sixth Congress); resumed his insurance business until his death in Tucson, Ariz., February 8, 1948; interment in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bernardsville, N.J.
