Biography

Representative from New Jersey; born in New York City January 17, 1916; attended St. Mark's School, Southboro, Mass.; graduated from Princeton University in 1938; graduated from Yale Law School in 1941; admitted to the bar in 1941; lawyer, private practice; practiced law in New York City from December 1941 to April 1942; Office of Naval Intelligence from September 1942 to December 1945 and was released to inactive duty with a commission as lieutenant; took postgraduate work in history at Columbia University in 1946 and 1947; staff of Foreign Affairs Task Force of the Hoover Commission, May to October 1948; engaged in investment business in New York City; director of Howard Savings Bank, Livingston, N.J.; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-third Congress and to the ten succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1953-January 3, 1975); was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninety-fourth Congress in 1974; died on May 23, 2011, in Harding Township, N.J.; interment at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, Morristown, N.J.
