Biography
Representative from New Jersey; born in Redding, Fairfield County, Conn., February 5, 1800; moved with his father to Albany, N.Y., in 1805; attended the public schools; was a member of the guard of honor to receive General Lafayette on his visit to the United States in 1824; moved to New York City in 1824 and to Jersey City in 1834; served three terms as a freeholder of Hudson County; elected first mayor of Jersey City in 1838 and held the office three terms; was at one time a director of sixteen different railroads; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1848; engaged in banking; died in Jersey City, N.J., December 8, 1874; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
