a Senator from Maryland; born in Elkton, Cecil County, Md., April 4, 1838; completed preparatory studies in the Tennent School, Hartsville, Pa.; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1861 and commenced practice in Elkton, Md.; member of the Maryland constitutional convention 1867; elected to the State house of delegates in 1871, 1872, and 1873; elected Governor in 1874 to fill a vacancy and served from 1874 to 1876; resumed the practice of law; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1879, to March 3, 1885; collector of customs for the port of Baltimore 1889-1893; died in Baltimore, Md., October 5, 1893; interment in Elkton Presbyterian Cemetery, Elkton, Md.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
