A Senator from Tennessee; born in Maryville, Tennessee, on July 3, 1940; B.A., Vanderbilt University 1962; J.D., New York University Law School 1965; governor of Tennessee 1979-1987; chairman of the National Governors Association 1985-1986; U.S. secretary of education 1991-1993; elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 2002; reelected in 2008, and again in 2014, and served from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2021; chair, Republican Conference (2008-2012); chair, Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (One Hundred Fourteenth through One Hundred Sixteenth Congresses); was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2020.
