Biography

A Representative from Georgia; born near Penfield, Greene County, Ga., November 13, 1805; attended the common schools and was also instructed by private tutors; was graduated from Franklin College (now the University of Georgia) in 1825; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Monroe, Walton County, Ga.; moved to Lagrange, Troup County, Ga., in 1828, and continued the practice of law; also engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of representatives in 1831 and 1832; served in the State senate in 1837 and 1838; served in the State militia as a major general 1838-1850; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth, and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1851); chairman, Committee on Military Affairs (Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850; resumed the practice of law; died in Lagrange, Troup County, Ga., September 25, 1854; interment in Hill View Cemetery.
