a Senator from Massachusetts; born on September 12, 1959, in Kittery, Maine; graduated Wakefield High School, Wakefield, Mass., 1977; B.A., Tufts University, 1981; J.D., Boston College Law School, 1985; Massachusetts Army National Guard 1979-2014, attaining the rank of colonel, and serving in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps; lawyer, private practice; Wrentham, Mass., selectman 1995-1998; member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives 1999-2004; member of the Massachusetts state senate 2004-2010; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in a special election on January 19, 2010, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward M. Kennedy, a seat subsequently held by appointed senator Paul G.
