Biography

Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Berne Township, near Reading, Berks County, Pa., October 10, 1790; attended the common schools; served as a lieutenant during the War of 1812; engaged in agricultural and mercantile pursuits in Lancaster County; justice of the peace 1823-1828; was an unsuccessful Anti-Mason for reelection to the Twenty-first Congress; elected as an Anti-Mason to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1831-March 3, 1837); delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1837; member of the State senate 1840-1842 and served as speaker in 1842; died in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pa., on October 13, 1853; interment in Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, Pa.
