Biography
A Representative from Alabama; born on a farm near Lebanon, Wilson County, Tenn., November 11, 1869; attended the common schools; studied law at Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn.; was admitted to the bar in 1891 and practiced in Birmingham, Ala., until 1911, when he retired from practice; during the Spanish-American War served as a private in the First Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Infantry; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fourth and to the ten succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1915-January 3, 1937); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1936; died in Birmingham, Ala., February 29, 1960; interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
