Biography
Representative from North Carolina; born in Loudoun County, Va., February 26, 1785; moved with his parents to North Carolina, who settled at Longs Mill (now Liberty), Randolph County; attended private and public schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits in Randolph County, N.C.; served in the North Carolina state house of representatives in 1811 and 1812; member of the North Carolina state senate in 1814 and 1815; elected as a Democratic Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, elected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and reelected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1829); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress; resumed his agricultural pursuits; died at Longs Mill (now Liberty), Randolph County, N.C., August 11, 1857; interment in Richland Graveyard.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
