Biography

A Representative from New York; born in Fayette, Seneca County, N.Y., January 4, 1812; attended the public schools and the Canandaigua Academy in Ontario County, N.Y.; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Penn Yan, Yates County, N.Y.; district attorney of Yates County, N.Y., 1847-1850; member of the State assembly in 1859; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1867); was not a candidate for reelection in 1866; resumed the practice of law; died in Penn Yan, N.Y., April 22, 1889; interment in Lake View Cemetery.
