Biography
a Senator from New York; born in New York City on May 5, 1860; attended the public schools and the College of the City of New York; graduated from the law department of New York University in 1882; admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New York City; justice of the New York District Court 1893-1900; justice of the New York State Supreme Court 1900-1911, when he resigned, having been elected Senator; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1911, to March 3, 1917; was not a candidate for renomination in 1916; chairman, Committee on Interoceanic Canals (Sixty-third and Sixty-fourth Congresses); president of the New York County Lawyers' Association; trustee of New York University 1920-1927 and of the College of New Rochelle; resumed the practice of law in New York City; official referee of the New York Supreme Court from 1934 until his death in New York City May 17, 1943; interment in Calvary Cemetery, Long Island City, N.Y.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
