Biography
A Representative from Massachusetts; born in Southbridge, Worcester County, Mass., May 20, 1848; attended the public schools and was graduated from the high school; president of the Central Cotton Mills Co., the Southbridge Savings Bank, and the Edwards Co.; served as selectman of Southbridge; member of the State house of representatives in 1878 and 1879; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884; member of the Governor's council in 1906 and 1907; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-third Congress by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative William H. Wilder, and reelected to the five succeeding Congresses (November 4, 1913-March 3, 1925); voluntarily withdrew from public life, and engaged in banking in Southbridge, Mass., until his death there on April 24, 1930; interment in Oak Ridge Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
