Representative from California; born in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pa., September 11, 1887; moved to St. Davids, Pa., in 1891; attended the public schools; was graduated from Haverford (Pa.) College in 1910; during the First World War served in the Adjutant General's Office and in Ordnance 1917-1919; moved to California in 1924; business analyst and rancher; member of the city council of Banning, Calif., 1930-1932; served in the State assembly 1932-1936; member of the State senate 1936-1942; member of the United States delegation to the Eleventh World's Dairy Congress in Berlin in 1937; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1943-January 3, 1957); was not a candidate for renomination in 1956; delegate to Republican National Conventions in 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960; member of the American Battle Monuments Commission 1952-1961; engaged as a public relations counselor; was a resident of Hemet, Calif., until his death in Palm Springs, Calif., December 19, 1983; interment in Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City, Calif.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
