Biography

Representative from Alabama; born in Charleston, S.C., December 13, 1807; pursued classical studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Charleston, S.C., December 14, 1828; member of the State constitutional convention in 1832; member of the State house of representatives in 1833 and 1834; moved to Mobile, Ala., and continued the practice of law; member of the State house of representatives in 1844 and 1851; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1852; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1855); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1854 to the Thirty-fourth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C., and died there on January 14, 1884; interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Savannah, Ga.
