Biography
a Senator from Pennsylvania; born in Pittsburgh, Pa., December 21, 1880; attended private schools; graduated from Shadyside Academy, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1896, from Princeton University (N.J.) in 1900, and from the University of Pittsburgh Law School in 1903; admitted to the bar in 1903 and practiced in Pittsburgh, Pa., 1903-1917; chairman of the Pennsylvania Industrial Accidents Commission 1912-1915; during the First World War served as major in the field artillery 1917-1919; resumed the practice of law in Pittsburgh in 1919; appointed as a Republican on August 8, 1922, and elected on November 7, 1922, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy in the term ending March 3, 1923, caused by the death of William E. Crow, and on the same day was elected for the term commencing March 4, 1923; reelected in 1928, and served from August 8, 1922, to January 3, 1935; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934; chairman, Committee on Expenditures in Executive Departments (Sixty-ninth Congress), Committee on Military Affairs (Seventieth through Seventy-second Congresses); resumed the practice of law in Pittsburgh, Pa.; died in Sarasota, Fla., February 10, 1953; interment in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
