Biography
A Representative from Massachusetts; born in Deerfield, Franklin County, Mass., on March 7, 1826; attended Gorham Academy, Maine, and was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1846; preceptor in Leicester Academy, Massachusetts, 1847-1851; studied law in Worcester; was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice in that city; appointed judge of insolvency for Worcester County in 1858; mayor of the city of Worcester in 1860; district attorney for the middle district of Massachusetts 1869-1874; member of the State house of representatives in 1875; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1887); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1886 to the Fiftieth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Worcester, Mass., and died there March 1, 1896; interment in the Rural Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
