Biography

Representative from Rhode Island; born in Central Falls, Providence County, R.I., August 19, 1897; attended the public and high schools; worked in textile plants; during the First World War served in the United States Army as a private at Camp Meigs in 1918; was employed in the Treasury Department, Washington, D.C., 1919-1922; was graduated from the law department of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1922; was admitted to the bar in 1923 and commenced practice in Central Falls, R.I., the same year; served as probate judge of Central Falls 1929-1931, as coroner of Lincoln, R.I., in 1931 and 1932, and as judge of the eleventh district court of Rhode Island 1932-1935; delegate to the Republican State conventions in 1936, 1940, and 1942; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Francis B. Condon and served from August 6, 1935, to January 3, 1937; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1936 to the Seventy-fifth Congress; elected to the Seventy-sixth Congress (January 3, 1939-January 3, 1941); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1940 to the Seventy-seventh Congress; resumed the practice of law in Pawtucket, R.I.; died in Saylesville, in the township of Lincoln, R.I., December 26, 1943; interment in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, R.I.
