Representative from Florida; born in Ocilla, Irwin County, Ga., June 4, 1921; B.A., University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.,1942; United States Army, 1942-1946; attended George Washington University School of Law, Washington, D.C.; J.D., University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., 1948; lawyer, private practice; member, board of directors, Merck & Co. and Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fourth Congress by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, United States Representative Dwight L.
