Biography
Representative from Ohio; born in Dayton, Ohio, November 4, 1881; attended the public grade schools; served one year at the blacksmith trade; became court page in common pleas court of Montgomery County, Ohio; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1904 and commenced practice in Dayton, Ohio; assistant county prosecutor of Montgomery County, Ohio, 1906-1909; taught law at the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, 1923-1930; probate judge 1917-1929; assistant United States district attorney 1930-1932; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1928 and 1932; captain in the Officers' Reserve Corps 1925-1935; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress (January 3, 1939-January 3, 1941); was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1940 to the Seventy-seventh Congress; resumed the practice of law in Dayton, Ohio; appointed Solicitor for the Department of Labor, Washington, D.C., and served from March 6, 1953, until his death in Washington, D.C., April 14, 1953; interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
