Biography
Representative from Minnesota; born at Pleasant Springs, near Madison, Dane County, Wis., June 30, 1852; moved with his parents to Sheldon, Houston County, Minn., in 1853; attended the county schools and the high school in Rushford, Minn.; studied law at the Union College of Law in Chicago; was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced practice in Lanesboro, Minn.; moved to Crookston, Polk County, Minn., in 1880; prosecuting attorney of Polk County 1881-1883; city attorney of Crookston; member of the State senate 1883-1887; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1884 and 1888; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth and to the nine succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1903-March 3, 1923); chairman, Committee on Militia (Sixtieth and Sixty-first Congresses), Committee on Post Office and Post Roads (Sixty-sixth and Sixty-seventh Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922 to the Sixty-eighth Congress; vice president of the American group of the Interparliamentary Union; resumed the practice of law in Crookston, Minn., and died there November 22, 1926; interment in Oakdale Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
