Biography
Representative from Illinois; born near Le Roy, McLean County, Ill., February 1, 1857; attended the public schools, and was graduated from the Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington in 1881; superintendent of the public schools of Lexington, Ill., 1881-1883; studied law; was admitted to the bar in December 1884 and commenced practice in Bloomington, Ill.; State's attorney of McLean County 1892-1896; member of the Republican State central committee 1896-1898; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1903-March 3, 1913); one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 1912 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Robert W. Archbald, judge of the United States Commerce Court; unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Sixty-third Congress; elected to the Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses and served from March 4, 1915, until his death near Pontiac, Ill., as the result of an automobile accident, October 17, 1918; interment in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Ill.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
