Biography
a Senator from Massachusetts; born in Northampton, Mass., January 9, 1745; studied under private tutors; graduated from Harvard College in 1764; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in 1772; Northampton selectman; member of the committee of correspondence and safety throughout the Revolution; member, State house of representatives 1776-1778; member, State senate 1780-1788; county attorney 1776-1800; elected to the Continental Congress in 1780, but did not attend; member of the national convention in Philadelphia which framed the Constitution of the United States; member of the Massachusetts constitutional convention which ratified the Constitution of the United States; elected to the United States Senate in 1789; reelected in 1793, and served from March 4, 1789, to June 1, 1796, when he resigned; Governor of Massachusetts 1800-1807, 1812-1816; died in Northampton, Mass., November 7, 1819; interment in Bridge Street Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
