Biography
Representative and a Senator from New Hampshire; born in Roxbury, Mass., July 22, 1880; attended the public schools and Roxbury (Mass.) Latin School; moved to Temple, N.H., in 1903 and engaged in the raising of poultry; also engaged in insurance, agriculture, banking, and manufacturing; member, State house of representatives 1915-1916, 1919-1920, 1923-1924, serving as speaker 1919-1920; member, State senate, serving as president 1925-1926; Governor of New Hampshire 1929-1930; trustee of Colby Junior College, New London, N.H.; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third, Seventy-fourth, and Seventy-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1933-January 3, 1939); was not a candidate for renomination in 1938; elected to the United States Senate in 1938; reelected in 1944 and again in 1950 and served from January 3, 1939, until his death; chairman, Committee on Banking and Currency (Eightieth Congress), Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce (Eighty-third Congress); United States adviser, UNESCO Conference in Paris 1952; member of the United States delegation to the International Monetary Conference held in Bretton Woods, N.H., in 1944; died of coronary thrombosis in the naval hospital at Bethesda, Md., July 24, 1953; interment in Miller Cemetery, Temple, N.H.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
