Biography
A Representative from Kentucky; born in Goochland County, Va., on August 7, 1808; completed preparatory studies; moved to Kentucky in 1825; was graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1829; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Bowling Green; Ky., in 1830; moved to Texas in 1834; attorney general for the eastern district of Texas; returned to Bowling Green, Ky., in 1840; member of the State house of representatives in 1848; served in the State senate 1849-1853; elected as an American to the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1859); was not a candidate for renomination; United States consul to Glasgow, Scotland, from July 17, 1862, until September 30, 1864; returned to the United States and practiced law in San Francisco, Calif.; returned to Kentucky in 1866 and resumed the practice of law; died near Bowling Green, Ky., March 12, 1872; interment in Fairview Cemetery, Bowling Green, Ky.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
