Biography
A Representative from New York; born in Sing Sing (now Ossining), N.Y., September 16, 1816; pursued classical studies; engaged in commercial pursuits in New York City and at the same time attended the law department of New York University; was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in New York City; judge advocate general of the State 1853-1855; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1856; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1859); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858 to the Thirty-sixth Congress; elected to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1865); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 to the Thirty-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of law in New York City; elected to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); chairman, Committee on Commerce (Forty-fourth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876 to the Forty-fifth Congress; died in Roslyn, Nassau County, N.Y., February 7, 1882; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York City.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
