Biography

Representative from Georgia; born in Burke County, near Augusta, Richmond County, Ga., October 30, 1797; attended the common schools; moved to Dublin, Laurens County, Ga., in 1816; served as a second lieutenant of Volunteers in the expedition against the Seminoles in 1818; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced practice in Dublin, Laurens County, Ga.; was also a regularly ordained Baptist minister, but never filled a definite charge; moved to Marion in 1825; elected major of the State militia in 1823; member of the State house of representatives in 1824 and 1831; served in the State senate in 1830; solicitor general and judge of the southern circuit of Georgia 1831-1834; moved to Americus, Sumter County, in 1836; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1843); was not a candidate for renomination in 1842; moved to Albany in 1842; was judge of the superior court of Georgia 1843-1852; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Albany, Dougherty County, Ga., June 17, 1861; interment in Riverside Cemetery.
